About Me

Watching blockbusters at home

I spend all day interacting with strangers at work so when I finish up I like to chill out at home and watch a blockbuster movie. I have a really awesome theatre room that has a cinema-like experience. It's a great way to be able to chill out and I love to be able to invite people over for movie night. I am always looking at ways to make the experience even better, so I regularly update my audio visual equipment. This blog has some of my research into new audio visual items that you can use in home theatres. I hope it's useful for other people setting up their theatre room.

Top Tips for Choosing a Projector Screen

Home entertainment systems are going to the next level, and customers are no longer restricted to televisions. With home-based theatres becoming common, projectors are quickly replacing big-screen TVs as modern entertainment devices. However, since projectors are adaptable and can project on any flat surface, do you really need a screen? While a flat wall will suffice, specially designed screens offer superior image quality.

Here are tips for choosing the right projector screen for your entertainment needs.

1. Fixed or Retractable

Projector screens come in two kinds: fixed and retractable. Both types perform equally well, but each is designed for specific situations. Retractable projector screens are the best for multipurpose rooms, which are occasionally used for entertainment. The reason is that retractable projector screens get out of the way when not needed. On the other hand, fixed screens are often installed in dedicated home entertainment rooms. Do not install a fixed screen in high traffic areas because they might be susceptible to damage. Therefore, before settling on a fixed or retractable screen, ask yourself where you will be installing it.

2. Room Size

Knowing the size of your entertainment room should also guide you in choosing the right projector screen. Most people believe that since they can adjust the size of the projected images, then room size does not matter. However, nothing could be further from the truth because the size of a wall matters a lot. Since you already have a projector, turn it on and project a blank image on a wall. The test gives you a good idea of how big or small a screen should be. Additionally, the size of a room determines the optimal distance of a projector from a screen for.

3. Screen Color

You would be surprised at the number of people who think that projector screens only come in white. It might explain why people who use their walls as screens paint them white. It does not mean that you cannot use a projector screen of a different colour. Typically, white is considered industry-standard, especially if you have a dedicated home theatre where you can block out natural and artificial light sources for crisp images. On the other hand, grey and black screens are perfect for rooms with significant ambient light because of their superior light-absorption properties. However, you should only choose a grey or black screen if you have a powerful projector to compensate for the absorption of light.
